Tryout guide

How to prepare for travel softball tryouts

Every spring and fall, families ask us the same question: what do coaches actually look for at softball tryouts? Here is exactly how the Victory Softball staff in Asheville, NC evaluates players, what to bring, and how to train in the weeks leading up to tryout day.

What coaches look for

Hustle

Sprint on and off the field, chase every ball, and be first in line for a rep. Effort is the one thing every player controls.

Attitude

Encourage teammates you just met, take coaching without excuses, and reset quickly after a bad rep.

Mechanics

Clean footwork on throws, an athletic ready position, a repeatable swing, and safe, confident glove work matter more than raw results.

Coachability

We give a correction during tryouts on purpose. We want to see the adjustment on the very next rep.

Softball IQ

Know the count, the outs, and where the play goes before the pitch. Talk on defense.

Tryout day checklist

  • Glove (and catcher's gear or first-base mitt if applicable)
  • Bat and helmet with face mask
  • Cleats plus turf shoes or sneakers
  • Athletic pants or sliders, hair tied back
  • Two water bottles and a light snack
  • Completed medical/emergency contact info for a parent to hand in
  • Positions you want to be seen at, written down

A four-week prep plan

4 weeks out

Three throwing sessions a week to build arm strength, plus tee and front-toss work most days. Add short sprints for home-to-first speed.

1 week out

Reduce volume, keep quality reps. Get a lesson or a coach's eye on your primary position. Sleep is part of training.

Tryout day

Arrive 30 minutes early, warm up your arm before check-in, introduce yourself to the coaches, and play loud and confident.

Common questions

What ages does Victory Softball hold tryouts for?

We field 8U through 14U teams. Players are evaluated by age division and placed on the team that best fits their development.

Do I need to be an elite player to try out?

No. We evaluate effort, attitude, and coachability alongside skills, and we develop players year-round in practice and in our faith-based curriculum.

What should I wear to a softball tryout?

Team-style practice gear: athletic pants or sliders, cleats, a tucked-in shirt, and hair tied back. Look like a ballplayer before you throw a pitch.
